Had lunch at Callas and it was not disappointing. Would have to say very impressed with the standard of food generally in Budapest so far. Had a delicious meal here. Staff were charming and the food was excellent. My son had the Fillet Mignon and reckoned it was up there as one of the best he had had. He finished with the chocolate mousse and merlot jelly cake - fab.
If you are looking for a very refreshing non-alcoholic drink then give the elderberry grape lemonade a try - it was lovely.
Again, not the cheapest restaurant in Budapest but as a UK visitor great value for money.

This is an elegant ,relaxing venue for everyone...However as a pre or post opera venue it has the style and elegance of its namesake...
I must admit that I have only sampled drinks ,coffee and the gorgeous pastries.
Situated on the main Boulevard of Andrassy Street it is a place to relax outside in the Spring and Summer and to fashion watch before the Opera at any time..
The Diva would have been absolutely at home in the delightful interior..

His starter wasn't amazing though - ham with polenta chips and corn. It was mostly salad and not a lot else. However, the two main courses were so good that blip was forgotten. The wait staff are fluent in English, courteous, and attentive. Our food was unbelievably delicious. I had a Hungarian meat dish with three kinds of pork and some roasted potatoes. It was perfectly cooked--and the portion was huge. My friend and I liked the place so well that we went back again, and I couldn't resist having the same meal. The prices were quite reasonable by American standards (about $15 a plate). This restaurant is apparently very popular, as it was jammed on Saturday night. The service staff went above and beyond to make sure all of my needs were met. I ate at the restaurant twice during my stay and every meal that our party had was delicious. I highly recommend the Pork medallions as well as the Ravioli.

The cakes were gorgeous and the waiters excellent and professional. Go there!

“Leuk na opera bezoek”

Een restaurant waar je je in lang vervlogen tijden waart. Heel leuk voor een laat diner na operabezoek. metrohalte voor de deur. Lifemuziek voor een echte beleving. Voor Hongaarse begrippen prijzig maar dan ook prachtige gerechten met mooie ingrediënten. Vooraf tapas gerechten te bestellen. Leuk om te delen met elkaar. Voor mij was het de tweede keer bij Callas cafe (vorig jaar april ook geweest). Bij reservering de opmerking 'nice to have you as our guest again'. Dan voel je je echt welkom!

“Great food, great atmosphere”

Went here during a short city break. Recommended by our concierge at the hotel and didn't disappoint. Food and drinks were brilliant, I had the tapas plate and my girlfriend had goats cheese both were lovely, I would highly recommend the Angus fillet but my girlfriend had the fillet Budapest style and she would say the same about hers. The evening we were there had live music which was lovely, would have been nicer if they spent more time playing as they'd play a few songs and then sit at the bar for 20 minutes but all in all a highly recommended place to go. People have made a few comments about price, yes it is expensive for Budapest if you had the same experience in London would pay much more. For 2 cocktails, 1 bottle of wine, 2 starts, 2 mains and 1 dessert inclusive of service was about £110.

“Unforgettable evening”

We walked past the Callas the day before and peaked inside, the waiters were so friendly and helpful and as we loved the ambiance of the restaruant decided to book for the 6 of us on the Saturday evening, we were not dissapointed, the service was brilliant, food excellent, we chose Hungarian dishes, they were delicious, we all loved our food and only had food envy becaused we would have loved to have tried each others plates too. The string quartet and pianest were a wonderful addition to the evening, picking up on the type of diners eating during the evening played the old favorites which ended up with everyone getting dancing and singing along, Speaking to our waiter he said it depended on the diners how the evening evolved. This eveing for us was one for a memory book, could not fault it, prices were probably a little higher than some restaurants in Budapest, but still very very good compared to the quality, service and atmosphere you would pay for in London, average main course price was around £10-13.

Essen sehr gut, gehobene Preiskategorie. Singen, Klatschen, erstklassige Musik, Trinken - was will man mehr.

“Just aside of the Opera House…”

After a recommendation from the concierge of our Hotel, we have had dinner at Callas Café, end of December, 2013.
The restaurant is housed in an historical, art deco’ room, characterized by old, stylish furniture; decoration on the vault and on the walls belong to the same period. The music was excellent: the small orchestra, conducted by a high performing “primo violino”, was perfectly tuned, engaged and had great fan while playing; it was probably a little too noisy, but we appreciated it a lot. The compositions proposed where from Viennese authors (like Strauss) and well aligned with the historical place. The food wasn’t as good as music: nevertheless, still acceptable. Good choice of typical, local wines. The service was kind and correct: we noted a mistake in the bill and the gentle waiter brought us two glasses of Tokai, to pardon his error. I recommend this restaurant if you please to have a nice dinner, in the most fascinating part of Andrassy Avenue, remembering the old beautiful times…

Pleasant place on Andrassy street

I come there from time to time, for a glass of wine, or for a cake with coffee. If you walk the Andrassy street, you need to get there. Just because of the atmosphere that emphasise a mood of the district surrounding Opera. I didn't eat there, just once I have ordered a lemon soup, during the hot afternoon in summer, it was good. The most interesting is to sit on the terrace. The waiters are quite nice. Inside interior is also impressive, very "old-time". Once I have seen the performance of traditional Hungarian dancers, I guess if you come to dine there, you may see it. On other times, if you sit inside, an awesome band is playing classical music on violins and other instruments. Good cafe, once again

"Perfect compliment to the Opera House"

As part of our Big Night Out, we took the advice of the guide books, and had an early dinner in Cafe Callas, next door to the Opera House, and were treated extremely well. We had not booked, and explained we had tickets to the ballet, we were seated, guided through the menu, and servid in an unhurried way which still allowed us time to gently get to our seats in the Opera House on time. We chose a main course and dessert, the wine was superb, and the food amazing. My wife had a beautiful roast lamb dish with creamy mashed potato, I had a fish tagliatelli with a fillet of pike, topped with a whole fresh water crayfish, both beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. We had pastries for dessert, which were equally good. The bill for the two of us, including a good wine, was around £40.00, I cannot think of a restaurant in the UK which offers such excellent service, food and wine, and a stunningly attractive dining room, at anything like such a competetive price. Others may have different views, I have dined in places from truckers greasy spoons to the Captains Table on the QE2, this was memorable. Nor, I admit, Michelin star quality, but for that you would pay three or four times the price, but certainly comparable with 'named chef' establishments.

Pleasant venue right next to the Opera

Of course, one would exepct this place to attract the theatre crowd, and it did. We had tickets to the opera, and it started fairly early so we wanted a nice place as we had got dressed up ! Overall the food was good here. We had soup, salad and shared a sweet. Considering the location prices are Ok, and the food was well presented. I found the service again OK, if a little formal, as I think it takes itself too seriously. Perhaps they need to try just that little bit harder as they probably have a captive crowd. Dr Malc

Loved the place - the music the food

We went for drinks at the end of a long day walking the town because our hotel was nearby. What a fun place! We ended up going back a couple more times and for dinner. Each night there was live music - a string trio with excellent violinists. One night, (there were a couple of groups there from out of the country) 2 opera singers joined into the fun. This is not serious opera, but "have a beer with you" singers. If you appreciate music you will love it. For food - the pastries drew us in in the first place. Beautiful and nummy. Our dinners were great - and a reasonable price for what you got (compared to all the other restaurants in Budapest). We will always go back here. This is the way I want to remember Hungary!!!!

"High quality restaurant in amazing location"

I had a reservation dinner here with my friends in the evening one weekend. As somebody mentioned, weekends there is a live orchestra (which we didn't know) and so we were pleasantly surprised with that. Sat outside, we could still hear all of it - a great mix of classical pieces, with light opera-type singing (how convenient, as the restaurant is right next to the Opera - you see it while sat outside at least), sometimes smooth jazz, sometimes Hungarian gypsy pieces for orchestra. It was very pleasant, all of us thought so. The waitor we got was Hungarian with a beautiful British accent, very helpful and sophisticated waitor, who was even ready to accomodate us inside when we asked (then we changed our mind). The food was amazing, so representable, special, and very tasty. The whole setting with the food made you feel important and good. We had desserts too, and they were also tasty. The menu has really special foods, from duck, veil, to rabbit and so on. The prices were higher than at an average restaurant, but it really was worth it. The only "negative" would be that when it got a bit chilly outside, there were no heating lamps - so take clothing with you if planning to sit outside in the autumn! A memorable evening, and I recommend!

Amazing Year after Year

The restaurant is beautifully located next to the Opera house. It has both exterior and inside seating. The atmosphere is just amazing. We went last year by mistake and loved their food quality and presentation. This year we made sure to go back again. The home made ravioli is a must as well as the the beef and goose liver combo plate. On weekends there is a live band that sings all the "oldies" classics from all over the world. The menu changes every six months so its nice if you go like us every year, you have new things to taste. The staff are friendly and always willing to accommodate your request. Deserts are not the best. They are pre-plated and you have to choose from the desert display.

This is a lovely restaurant, relatively smart but relaxed. The food was imaginative, excellent and stylishly prepared and was very good value - my friend and I had 3 courses, a bottle of wine, mineral water and coffee for about 30 pound a head (the wine list is made up of rather pricey wines but the house wine was excellent and reasonably priced). The waiters were helpful and friendly and the restaurant itself is beautifully decorated. Certainly the best meal I had in Budapest. Strongly recommended.
